Julian Warburton - Biography

Julian Warburton is especially well known and admired for his performances of repertoire from the 20th and 21st Centuries as a percussionist and more recently as Conductor.  He is particularly in demand for his musical interpretations and has earned an indisputable reputation for his expressive musical versatility and technical virtuosity.

Julian has built close relationships with many leading performers, conductors and composers. He receives regular invitations to perform with ensembles such as London Sinfonietta, Nash Ensemble, Endymion Ensemble, Ensemble Expose, Music Theatre Wales, Aldeburgh Music and Composers Ensemble. He currently holds the position of Principal Percussion with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.

Julian has performed world-wide as a soloist under the management of The Young Concert Artists’ Trust, the first and only solo percussionist to win their representation.  He soon established himself as an influential performer and along with Colin Currie formed the highly polished “Percussion Duo London” and played a major role in revolutionising the genre of solo percussion.  Julian made his BBC Proms debut as a soloist in 2001 performing Rebonds by Xenakis to huge critical acclaim.

In 2007 he was nominated for a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for his outstanding performances.

Julian made his conducting debut in June 2007 at The Aldeburgh Festival with the World Premiere of Elephant and Castle, a large-scale multi media Opera, with music by Tansy Davies and libretto by Blake Morrison. As well as conducting BCMG Julian has worked alongside Oliver Knussen conducting the Britten Pears Orchestra. Under the guidance of French conductor Diego Masson, he has acquired invaluable experience, successfully conducting Eugene Onegin at the Dartington International Summer School in 2008 and is delighted to have been invited back again this year to conduct performances of Madam Butterfly.

Julian Warburton studied performance, conducting and composition at the University of Huddersfield and went on to win a place on the highly prestigious Advanced Solo Studies course at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
